Here, we take a look back through the archives at eight former Sunderland players who have had the last laugh when they faced their former club in recent seasons.
The likes of Darren Bent, David Meyler and Frazier Campbell all feature in our photo gallery of former players who had had the last laugh.
5. Daryl Murphy
The former Sunderland and Newcastle United striker managed just 14 goals in 114 appearances on Wearside but he struck in the 86th minute for Nottingham Forest back in 2017 to sink Sunderland to defeat. Photo: Alex Livesey
6. David Meyler
The combative midfielder mustered up just 25 appearances in six years for Sunderland but he left his mark against the Black Cats six years ago today when he scored in the quarter-finals to set Hull City on their way to Wembley. Photo: Ashley Allen
7. Frazier Campbell
Five goals in six years was a disappointing return for Campbell but he showed what Sunderland had let go during his first season for Cardiff City, netting in a 2-2 draw as the Black Cats scored two in the final seven minutes to earn a point. Photo: Christopher Lee
8. Julio Arca
A Sunderland cult hero making 157 appearances for Sunderland before switching to Teesside and linking up with Middlesbrough in 2006. One year later he scored in the derby, just like Leadbitter, as he headed home Stewart Downing’s cross before Liam Miller scored a last-minute equaliser. Photo: Clive Rose
