Tony Mowbray has made an encouraging start to life on Wearside and has managed to integrate some of those previously on the fringes in two impressive recent away performances.
Here we take a look at those who are thriving thus far, and who will be hoping for a bigger chance to impress soon...
5. BAILEY WRIGHT
Not been able to make much of an impact yet but that isn’t really much fault of his own. Needed longer to build his fitness in pre-season after his summer international exploits, and Batth’s form since then has kept him out of the starting XI. A leader off the pitch, he’s still made some important contributions along the way, particularly away at Stoke. C+ Photo: FRANK REID
6. DANNY BATTH
Arguably the unsung hero of the opening ten games. That Sunderland have by and large played in a back three has suited him but he’s been brilliant defensively and an excellent support to those either side, who are often inexperienced at the level and playing out of position. A Photo: Frank Reid
7. DANIEL BALLARD
Played less than three games before suffering a significant injury but had already shown enough in that time to show what a player he will be for the club in the long run. So while frustrating for player and club, better times are undoubtedly ahead. B- Photo: Frank Reid
8. LUKE O'NIEN
Struggled with the pace of Championship football in his early appearances but has done well since dropping back to defence in the wake of Ballard’s injury and has again proved his value to the squad. The right side of defence looks his best position. B Photo: FRANK REID
