AC Milan swap deal talks could scupper Sunderland move for Roma star

The latest transfer talk from Sunderland as the Black Cats are said to have reignited their interest in a Roma winger.

Sunderland are reportedly facing competition from potential Europa League opponents AC Milan over a deal for Roma star Matias Soule.

The Black Cats were linked with the former Juventus winger earlier in the summer following reports Roma could allow him to depart the club after he scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 42 appearances in all competitions last season. Soule still has three years remaining on his current deal at the Stadio Olimpico - but there have been suggestions Roma could be open for a sale before the end of the summer transfer window with La Gazetta dello Sport suggesting they could agree to a move ‘for precisely economic reasons’ as they look to meet the conditions of a financial fair play settlement.

Speaking earlier this month, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano gave an insight into what could lie ahead for the versatile winger as he said: “The chances of Soulé leaving are very concrete, now or at the end of the market. Milan isn’t thinking about it for now, but if they shouldn’t find anything else, they could make a move.” However, the winger offered little in in the way of an indication over his future with Roma when he returned to the Serie A club for pre-season training as he told reporters: “Will I stay? Honestly, I don’t know.”

However, there has been a further update on Soule’s future from a number of Italian news outlets as the summer transfer window approaches its final stages. Il Messaggero have claimed Roma are looking to make loan signings before the window closes in early September and suggests Soule could be allowed to move on with AC Milan now showing an interest in his services. La Repubblica have followed up by stating the Giallorossi have resumed talks with their Serie A rivals and Milan duo Rafael Leao and Christopher Nkunku have been proposed as potential options to ‘build a deal’ that could see Soule move to the San Siro. However, there are also claims stating Sunderland have also reignited their interest in the Argentina Under-20 international.
