The Cobblers are looking to drag themselves away from the bottom four, and were buoyed by a midweek win over Gillingham.

But Curle is under no illusions as to the challenge his side will face against Lee Johnson’s outfit.

Speaking in Northampton’s match day programme, Curle said: "When we won promotion to League One, we spoke about the step up and some of the big games we would face and I am sure this game is one of those supporters had in mind when the fixtures were announced.

"Sunderland are a Premier League side in stature, and we will need to produce the highest standard of performance to try and secure a result.”

Meanwhile, Barnsley boss Valerien Ismael has hinted that Sunderland-linked winger Luke Thomas could be allowed to head out on loan this month.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a temporary move to the Stadium of Light, with Ipswich Town and Oxford United also credited with an interest.

And Ismael didn’t pour cold water on those rumours when quizzed on interest in the former Derby man.

“We will see,” said the Barnsley boss when asked about Thomas’ situation.

"He is one player for sure that wants to play more.

“Yes, he has the quality, he’s shown the quality but he’s a young guy, he has to learn a lot. We will see what happens next week.”
