Sunderland AFC transfer and takeover news LIVE: Transfer updates and reaction to 2-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle

Sunderland are targeting some further additions to their squad with less than two weeks remaining in the transfer window.

Lee Johnson has so far brought in midfielder Carl Winchester – who made his full debut in last night’s defeat against Plymouth Argyle – but is targeting further additions before the deadline on February 1.

Sunderland are looking to secure reinforcements at either end of the pitch following an injury to Denver Hume.

Away from transfers, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ takeover of the club continues to dominate the discussion as we enter the period in which it was initially hoped a deal would be sanctioned.

Transfer news as former defender signs for Carlisle

An absolute must-read

Investment needed at Sunderland

Lee Johnson says Sunderland need to invest in their pitches after the Stadium of Light turf was badly affected by Storm Christoph.

Sunderland's clash with Plymouth Argyle had been in doubt at one stage, with water left standing on the turf.

The pitch then cut up badly through the game as the conditions eased somewhat.

The Sunderland head coach said Plymouth adjusted to conditions better than his side had done, particularly in the opening exchanges.

While clear that better defending and more composure in the final third was the root cause of another frustrating home defeat, Johnson says that investment is needed across the club to help instill his philosophy in the long term.

This is a big concern

Lee Johnson admitted he is concerned about Jordan Willis' fitness after the centre-back came off injured during the 2-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

Willis has been managing a long-term issue with his patellar tendon, and the hope was that an injection administered in the latter weeks of Phil Parkinson's tenure would see the 26-year-old through the rest of this campaign.

A heavy Stadium of Light pitch clearly did not help the centre-back on Tuesday night, and Johnson says he will have to be carefully managed through the next few weeks.
