Northern League: Seaham Red Star assistant rues errors in Park View defeat

It was a busy weekend in the Ebac Northern League.

Seaham Red Star assistant manager Michael Johnson bemoaned ‘stupid mistakes’ as his side fell to a narrow defeat at Division Two rivals Park View.

Mark Collingwood’s side started on top and got themselves in front just after the midway point of the first-half with a goal from Reece Blakey as he rounded off a neat team move. The lead remained in place until the opening stages of the second-half when hosts defender Jamie Frizzel was left unmarked from a free-kick and was able to chest the ball home from close range.

A decisive blow was then dealt just before the hour-mark when Park View dangerman Charlie Loveday was found by Nathan Conroy and he produced a powerful finish beyond Red Star keeper Shaun Newbrook to rack up his sixth league goal of the season.

That was enough to ensure the hosts moved to within two points of the Division Two play-off places and left Red Star in the bottom half of the table with 12 games gone in the campaign.

Assistant manager Johnson believes Red Star produced ‘another good performance’ to put themselves into a winning position at Riverside Complex - but was left frustrated by the lack of concentration that allowed their hosts to turn the game on its head and land another three points on their home patch.

He told The Echo: “It’s another good performance but we have let ourselves down with stupid mistakes that cost us two goals. We controlled the first-half, we’ve scored a very good goal and we are in control. We came out for the second-half, we were very sloppy, and chances came to them via mistakes. We’ve let them back into it and the two goals we conceded were very poor. Take those out of the game, and it’s a very good performance, but you can’t afford to make those mistakes and we have to stop doing that otherwise we won’t be where we want to be.”
