A final chance for a bargain

These were the scenes at the shop which was in the Market Place as shoppers grabbed last-minute bargains for one final time.

The store had first opened in 1928 and was well known in later years for its striking white shop front.

Woolworths stores were famous for pick n mix, Ladybird clothes, and the latest single from the record section.

Sunderland’s branch had already closed

The retail chain went into administration late in 2008, with administrators Deloitte closing all the 807 stores between 27 December 2008 and 6 January 2009, which resulted in 27,000 job losses.

But people still remember it as one of their favourite places to shop.

The iconic Sunderland store, which had been open since 1923, closed in 2004 after being sold to Primark, which then relocated within the city.
