Wicker coffins and urns found inside shipping container which caught fire

Crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) were called to New Herrington Industrial Estate, Freezemoor Road, Houghton, on Wednesday, July 29.

Firefighters spent four hours bringing the blaze under control, dampening down hot spots in the wicker and cardboard which were inside the container.

The container measured approximately three metres by 20 metres. It 50% damaged by fire and 50% damaged by smoke.

A spokeswoman added: “A man attempted to extinguish the fire, and had smoke inhalation and minor burns to both arms.

"He was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment resulting in smoke inhalation and minor burns to both arms.

“We would urge anyone who sees a fire to never tackle it themselves, get safely away from the area call 999 and wait for the fire service.”
