Whilst Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, is expected to unleash its wrath predominantly in the southern half of the UK, the Met Officer have now said Sunderland and the north of the country will be hit across the weekend by Storm Boelo.

The Met Office Yellow Weather Warning is in place from 6pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson said: “Storm Boelo will bring a very windy spell this weekend with some disruption likely across parts of northern UK.

“Strong westerly winds will spread across northern parts of the UK during Saturday evening. Very windy conditions will persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later.

“Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely with some coastal or exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more. Strong winds will be combined with spells of heavy rain.”

The Met Office spokesperson then went on to warn about the potential dangers to expect.

They added: “Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible and some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen.

“Injuries and danger to life could also occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

“Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.”

The spokesperson also warned about the potential for travel disruption, with some roads and bridges having to close and road, rail, air and ferry services potentially affected.
