High winds set to last through the weekend in Sunderland

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for wind covering yesterday and today, Thursday, March 11, earlier in the week and although that has now been withdrawn, winds are still high.

Gales are forecast for later today, with winds predicted to gust as fast at 40mph – force eight on the Beaufort Scale – around 5pm.

And the windy weather shows little inclination to let up much over the weekend.

Friday is expected to see gusts as high as 36mph while speeds of up to 34mph are expected on Saturday and Sunday. Anything between 32mph and 38mph is classed as Force 7 ‘near gale’

It is not until next week that the winds really ease, with maximum gusts no higher than 18mph – force 4, or a ‘moderate breeze’ – forecast for Monday.

The weather forecast for the weekend says the remainder of today will see occasional showers turn heavy in the afternoon with a risk of hail, and perhaps some snow over the hills.

Showers will ease across eastern parts this evening, allowing prolonged clear spells to develop, but it will still be rather windy, particularly over high ground.

Friday is rather cloudy with showers, heavy at times. It will be breezy, but wind and showers will ease temporarily later in the day.

Saturday is set to be rather cloudy and windy with showery outbreaks of rain, wintry on hills. Sunday will be a little less windy, with sunny spells and a few showers.
