North East warned to brace itself for winds of up to 70mph and heavy showers as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for wind, which is expected to run from 9pm on Wednesday, March 10, until 3pm the following day, with the warning covering all of England and Wales.

It says strong winds accompanied by heavy and blustery showers may bring some disruption to the region.

The warning says: “Strong and gusty winds are likely to develop on Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday across England and Wales.

"Gusts of 50mph to 55 mph are possible inland, especially close to showers.

"Gusts may reach 60mph to 70 mph on coasts and hills, especially in the west, before gradually easing on Thursday afternoon.”

It says we should expect delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges as well as delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport likely, meaning some journeys will take longer.

There could be some short term loss of power and other services.

The North East forecast for today, Monday, March 8, is a mild but cloudy day, with outbreaks of rain.

There will be some brighter interludes in the east through the afternoon, with rain becoming more sporadic and the maximum temperature will be 9C.

Tonight it will be cloudy with the odd clear spell in the southeast with further periods of light rain, especially over the hills and a minimum temperature 2 °C.

Tomorrow it will be dry further east on Tuesday, with brighter spells and turning breezy with drizzle at times with heavy rain overnight into Wednesday.
