Heat wave set to come to end this week as Met Office issues yellow weather warning for thunderstorms

The recent spell of glorious weather is set to finish as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for the North East.

Forecasters predict that ‘intense’ thunderstorms could happen between Wednesday and Friday, with “torrential rain, hail, frequent lightning and strong gusty winds possible”.

The yellow weather warning is in place from 6 pm on Wednesday, June 16 until 6 am on Friday, June 18.

The Met Office said: “Although there remains significant uncertainty in location and timing, areas of thunderstorms are expected to move northeast across parts of England and Wales from late Wednesday through to Friday morning.

"Whilst not all locations will be affected, some intense thunderstorms may occur during this period with torrential rain, hail, frequent lightning and strong gusty winds possible.

"Rainfall totals of around 30 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving around 50 mm in 2-3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated.”

The news comes as the region continues to bask in sunshine during the hottest weekend of the year so far, with temperatures as high as 26°C on Sunday.

Here’s what we can expect in the coming days according to the Met Office:

Monday:

“Rather cloudy at first for many, however soon brightening up to further sunny spells.

"Feeling a little fresher than on Sunday, with a westerly breeze also developing. Maximum temperature 21 °C.”

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

“Warm and fine Tuesday, and perhaps initially Wednesday, ahead of cloudier conditions and perhaps a little rain making inroads from the northwest, possibly giving way to more showery conditions Thursday.”

Thursday, June 17 - Saturday, June 26

“Likely remaining warm, perhaps very warm and humid towards the southeast at first with the risk of thundery showers across central and south-eastern areas.

"Elsewhere sunny spells and fresher, with some rain and thicker cloud towards the north and west at times.

"The fresher air is then likely to gradually spread to the rest of the country bringing a change to widely cooler more changeable conditions towards the end of the week, with a low risk of warm and humid air returning to the far southeast at times.

"This will likely bring occasional spells of rain or showers interspersed with drier and sunnier conditions.

"Overall, temperatures will likely average out to be close to normal.”
