An elderly man has been sent to hospital after being hit by a car in Shiney Row.

At around 12.25pm on Monday, February 3, emergency services were called with reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Philadelphia Lane near the Chester Road roundabout.

At the scene, officers found that an 80-year-old man had been hit by a car on Wheatsheaf Corner.

At 12.40pm a spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Emergency services are at the scene and the road is currently closed. Diversions are in place.”

North East Live Traffic tweeted at 12.30pm that traffic should “expect delays.”

In the aftermath, Go North East had to divert its Red Arrows X1 service with the closure affecting stops at Shiney Row Autoparts, Herrington Burn & Herrington Medical Centre.

At around 1.30pm, the road was clear.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We sent a double crewed ambulance and transported a male patient with a head injury to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”
