After our experiment asking Google’s Gemini AI chatbot to name the best things about Sunderland, we decided to set it the challenge of picking the ultimate Sunderland squad of all time.
Some choices you may well 100% agree with, but other suggestions make us feel reassured our sports writers won’t be replaced by artificial intelligence just yet.
We don’t recall Darren Fletcher or Danny Mills ever playing for Sunderland.
There was a Thomas Brown who played for Sunderland in the 1900s, and another who played in Scottish leagues, but we’ve been a bit stumped on this alleged “fan favourite”.
In its preamble, Google Gemini said: “Crafting an ultimate Sunderland squad is challenging due to the club's fluctuating fortunes.
“However, considering past and present stars, a potential dream team might include:”
The AI chatbot then went on to list the players and its reasons for choosing them as below, and we have used Gemini’s exact words.
Gemini concluded with: “Note: This is just one possible combination, and there are many other worthy candidates who could be included.
“The ultimate Sunderland squad is a matter of personal opinion and nostalgia.”
