Sunderland RNLI and Coastguard rescue ‘stricken’ fishing boat off Roker Pier
The incident took place at around 11.40am on Monday, August 31 after the UK Coastguard received a 999 call from the stranded boat.
The RNLI lifeboat was launched from Roker, with three volunteers onboard.

Hide AdWith the help of the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, alongside Sunderland Harbour Patrol, the crew located the stricken vessel approximately one mile off Roker Pier.
The boat was towed back to Sunderland Marina before being secured into its moorings. None of the seven passengers were harmed during the incident.
A statement on the RNLI Sunderland Facebook page said: “Volunteers paged by UK Coastguard following a 999 emergency call reporting a 26ft fishing vessel drifting with mechanical failure approximately one mile south east of Roker Pier.
“Lifeboat launched shortly after 11.40am with three volunteers onboard. With assistance from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and Sunderland Harbour Patrol the crew were quickly able to locate the stricken vessel before taking it under tow.

Hide Ad“The boat and its seven crew and passengers were [taken] back to Sunderland Marina before being secured into their own moorings.”
It added: “While the last few months have been an extremely busy period for our volunteers having launched on 31 occasions since July 1; it is important to acknowledge that without the support of volunteers families and employees we would not be able function as a vital emergency service.”
