Sunderland roadworks warning: Houghton Cut and seven other spots to see closures and disruption as resurfacing works take place

The works include daytime and overnight closures, including two overnight closures of the A690 Houghton Cut for Sunderland bound traffic.Diversions and traffic management will be in place for overnight closures at::: Doxford's Carrmere Road and Camberwell Way on Monday 3 August, Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 August between 7pm and 6am:: A19/A690 slip road (southbound off A19) on Monday 17, Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 between 7pm and 6am:: A690 eastbound Farm (Houghton Cut) to Stoneygate junction Thursday 19 and Friday 20 between 7pm and 6am. Closure of Houghton Cut into Sunderland and diversions via Newbottle.Council chiefs say works have been timetabled to minimise disruption as part of the council's programme for nearly 250 road and footpath projects over the financial year 20/21.Councillor Michael Mordey, deputy leader of Sunderland City Council and cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: "Maintaining and investing in our city's highways has always been and remains one of this City Council's main priorities."Our highways and transport networks are integral to the smooth flows of people, goods and services across Sunderland and we have a robust programme of annual works and maintenance."In delivering this year’s extensive resurfacing programme, a significant amount of the work was programmed for over the spring and summer and this work continues in August."We always plan to minimise any disruption and, on behalf of council staff and contractors, thank you for your patience as we complete these necessary works."Daytime closures with traffic management and diversions include::: A182 New Herrington roundabout and Millers Hill on Sunday 9, Sunday 16 and Sunday 23 August between 8am and 6pm:: Silksworth Road from junction of Allendale Road towards roundabout with Silksworth Way Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 August between 8am and 6pm:: Springwell Road from Chester Road roundabout southbound on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 August between 8am and 6pm:: B1405 Premier Road, Plains Farm, Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August between 8am and 6pm.A sum of over £5.7million was allocated to highways projects as part of the council's 2020/2021 capital budget in March.
