A full diversion route via Chester Road and City Way will be in place. Westbound access to residential properties is being maintained.

The two southbound sliproad closures start Thursday 8 and Friday 9 October from 7pm to 6am.

Council chiefs say the closures are necessary for more resurfacing as part of the junction’s upgrading with its extra lanes, new signaling and improvements to its drainage, fencing and kerbing.

Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Paul Stewart said: "These are very necessary works as we continue upgrading our highways network for residents and businesses."We always look to minimise disruption when we undertake projects like this and I would like to thank residents, drivers and all highways users for their patience as we move into the next stages of these very important works."

The work is part of a huge programme approved by councillors earlier in 2020.

More than 200 road and footpath projects are taking place across the city including resurfacing, work on bridges and traffic schemes such as 20mph zones.

Around £5.7million was scheduled in March for the projects as part of the council’s 2020/2021 capital budget.
