Earlier this year, plans were lodged for ‘The Salem’ in Salem Street, Hendon, formerly known as the Tap & Barrel.

Under new proposals, approved by city planners this month, the building is set for new chapter as a housing complex.

When works are brought forward, the building will be transformed into six apartments.

During council consultation, the plans sparked concerns and a neighbour petition with dozens of signatures.

Concerns included lack of parking, loss of privacy, the suitability of future tenants and the potential impact on nearby Nelson Close retirement housing scheme properties.

Despite this, Sunderland City Council gave the green light to the plans on Wednesday, December 18.

City planners also agreed the scheme would have several benefits for the area.

A report reads: “The proposed development would provide six new homes which would contribute to achieving the council’s overall housing target.

“It would bring back into use a property that has been vacant for a significant period of time and contribute to the regeneration of the surrounding area.”

According to planning documents, the Hendon pub has been vacant since 2006.

Work to transform the space is expected to start in coming years.
