Shaun, who lives in Washington, has a fear of hospitals and, despite the pain he was in, begged paramedics to take him home rather than to A&E.

But hours later, Shaun says the pain became unbearable and he had no other option but to seek medical help.

On arriving at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, he was then rushed by emergency ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, after doctors found a bleed on Shaun’s brain.

Shaun said: “I was on the way to work at Nissan, I got off the bus and I started to cross the road.

“I could see all the way up both roads and there were no cars in sight. I took three steps into the road and the car came hurtling towards me out of nowhere.

“The driver took off and I was just lay there on the ground. I could hardly see anything.

“he paramedics arrived and they checked me over but I have a fear of hospitals and I really didn’t want to go so they took me home.

“I was at home for about 12 hours and the pain was just unbelievable. It got to the point where I felt I just had to go to hospital.”
