Teacher's Halloween 'Truck & Treat' tour collects £1,000 worth of food for Sunderland Foodbank

More than £1,000 worth of food has been donated to Sunderland’s Foodbank thanks to a teacher’s Halloween efforts.

The dad-of-three launched the ‘Truck & Treat’ event on Facebook in a bid to see who would be interested and was inundated with requests from families asking him to visit their street.

Joined by dressed-up volunteers, Mr Foster visited around 40 streets across Wearside on October 31, handing out sealed sweets from a safe distance to youngsters who were accompanied by their parents.

The initiative aimed to raise funds for Wearside Women in Need and collect donations for the Sunderland Foodbank.

Mr Foster was left blown away by the generosity of the public who helped to raise £800 for the charities.

He said: “We made just under 40 stops in total and there were people waiting by the roadside to flag us down with donations.

"It was lovely to see so many streets all out together - standing outside their houses – and it’s something I hope we see at Christmas just as we did on VE Day earlier this year.

"As a community we raised close to £800 for the two charities and by the end of the night the truck was struggling with the amount of food people had donated.

"I cannot thank everyone enough for their support and enthusiasm. Sunderland seemed to really get behind the idea and it worked.

"I think we’ve made a real difference while ensuring our kids were still suitably terrified!”
