5. Follow the path
Follow the path along with Seaham Hall on your right and cross the bridge. Head up the slight slope and turn left when the pathway forks at the top. Photo: JPI
Looking across the playing fields to the right you can see New Seaham. The area was developed to serve the needs of Seaham Colliery which was sunk in the 1840’s. It has a record of explosions and loss of life, including the 1880 disaster which was one of the biggest in the history of coal mining with the loss of 164 lives. Photo: JPI
Follow the pathway down New Drive. Go passed Seaham Harbour Cricket Club on your right and walk between the housing estates to Seaham Railway Station. Photo: JPI
Follow the road straight on as it bears to the left to reach St Mary Magdalene's Roman Catholic Church. Cross the road opposite the church through a gap in the walls leading to a footpath and turn left. This walkway is the route of another railway, built at the same time as the harbour to transport coal from the Londonderry pits in mid-Durham. Photo: JPI
