Rotary Club continues foodbank support during coronavirus lockdown - despite fundraisers being cancelled

A North East Rotary Club has shown its support to two local foodbanks with a donation of £500 – despite all of its fundraising events being cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The foodbanks of St Michael & All Angels Church in Houghton and Fencehouses Community Centre were each given £250 by Houghton Rotary Club.

The Rotarians are also supporting 20 families by delivering food parcels.

They aim to look after those members of the community, including the most vulnerable and socially isolated, who were previously supported through their weekly group meetings.

They are also offering support through regular telephone conversations and, where possible, online, as well as keeping the council informed of needs they come across.

The donations were helped by Rotary North East District which has made match funding available, up to the value of £250, to each Rotary Club that makes a donation to help support people affected by Covid-19.

Club president Michael Gough said “We are very aware that many people are finding it increasingly hard to cope, with jobs and incomes being hit as a result of the lockdown. We are always happy to help in any way we can.

“As we are unable to meet regularly in person now, the club have been meeting online.

“As a result, we were able to easily authorise charitable donations such as these, as well as having the obvious benefit of keeping us all in touch.”
