An appeal is running over the festive season asking people to consider supporting local food banks and donating essential items.

And Kaiser Chiefs’ frontman Ricky Wilson, also known for his appearances on BBC’s The Voice, has got behind the campaign.

Ricky said: “We're really looking forward to performing in Sunderland next year when hopefully we've returned to some kind of normality.

“Right now we know there are lots of families finding it really tough around Christmas, which is why I'm pleased to say how they are helping out with their food bank scheme #LetsPullTogether.

“You can contribute as little as two pounds or there's loads of drop off points on the website. Every little helps as they. Wishing you and your families a happy and healthy Christmas.”

This year has been a difficult year for everyone, but for some there has been the additional worry of not having food in the cupboards, with food banks across the city working to support families to help ease this worry over Christmas and in the months to come.

The campaign will be reminding people about the much-needed essentials required by food donation points such as tinned vegetables, cereal, biscuits, tea and coffee, and these items will make a huge difference to families across Sunderland.

Throughout December, the campaign will feature on social media reminding people how they can help and make a difference in their local area.

A full list of items as well as a list of donation points for each area of the city is available on www.christmasinsunderland.co.uk as well as on the Sunderland UK Facebook page.

Cllr Linda Williams, Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City, said: “This year has indeed been tough for many residents, but nobody should be without food. We are reminding people of the need for essentials at this time of year and asking people to give only what they can. Sunderland residents are well known for their kindness, making our city the vibrant and welcoming place that it is.”
