Man in critical condition after being found with serious head injuries in Sunderland street

A man who was found with serious head injuries in a Sunderland street remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

Emergency services including the air ambulance were called to Chester Oval, close to the university’s Chester Road campus, after a man was found with serious head injuries on Monday afternoon (November 23).

Northumbria Police has confirmed on Tuesday, November 24, that the man is in a ‘critical but stable condition’.

Officers were first called to the scene following reports of a disturbance at an address in Alexandra Court.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called to the scene and the area was taped off by police as officers launched an investigation into the incident.

Detectives are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A force spokesman said previously: “Shortly after 2pm on Monday we received a report of a disturbance at an address in Alexandra Court, Chester Oval, Sunderland,” he said.

“Officers attended and found a man in the street with serious head injuries. Emergency services including the Air Ambulance attended the scene and Chester Road was temporarily closed, but has since reopened.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the nature of the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 560 231120.”

A North East Ambulance spokesperson added: "We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, a specialist paramedic and an officer and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"We transported one person by road to hospital.”
