'Key for Sunderland and South Tyneside economic growth': Major road improvement works completed
Major road improvement works on the A1290 at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) have now been completed, marking a significant milestone for economic growth in Sunderland and South Tyneside.
Esh Construction has finished the A1290 Dualling Works, delivering a major upgrade to one of the North East’s key transport routes. The scheme was delivered in partnership with IAMP LLP, a joint venture between Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council.
The project involved widening the existing single carriageway, upgrading junctions and introducing improved pedestrian and cycle facilities across the 370-acre IAMP site. The works form part of a wider programme of infrastructure improvements designed to unlock development at the nationally significant employment site, which supports advanced manufacturing and automotive industries, including Nissan and its supply chain.
Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “Delivering the A1290 Dualling Works has been a vital part of improving the region’s strategic road network and supporting future growth at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.

“This project continues to demonstrate our capability to deliver complex civil engineering schemes that enhance connectivity and unlock development opportunities. Working collaboratively with Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council, we’ve provided a high-quality infrastructure upgrade that will serve businesses, commuters, and communities for years to come.”
Around 1,550 metres of the A1290 has been transformed into a dual carriageway, much of it built off-line to minimise disruption. The scheme is expected to reduce congestion, improve journey times and offer safer, more sustainable travel options.
Drainage works, street lighting, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and landscaping were also delivered, with environmental considerations central to the design. The completed scheme is expected to help unlock further development at IAMP and support the creation of more than 7,000 jobs over the next decade.
Cllr Kevin Johnston and Cllr Margaret Meling both welcomed the completion, highlighting the role the improved infrastructure will play in attracting investment, accelerating job creation and establishing IAMP as a leading UK manufacturing hub.
