A number of Year 7 and Year 8 students were involved in baking lots of Fairtrade breakfast items such as banana muffins, raisin flapjacks and banana breakfast bars to serve to staff the following morning.

Dalton Park Starbucks donated Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar for the event, which students were responsible for serving. This year’s Fairtrade theme ‘Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!’ addresses the plight of poor farmers in developing countries. Students suggested the idea of serving breakfast to staff in order to raise awareness of this year’s theme.Lauren Dowsland, social religious studies teacher at the North Road School, said: “It was wonderful to see such a large amount of students committed to raising awareness of Fairtrade products. It was certainly a refreshing and new experience to have students serve the staff with breakfast that they were so knowledgeable about. All of the students thoroughly enjoyed the event and are hoping to replicate it next year.
