Gothic horror classic heading to Sunderland theatre
It’s a picture perfect staging for Halloween....
A Gothic horror classic will be in the spotlight in Sunderland, just in time for Halloween.

The Royalty Theatre, off Chester Road, will continue its 2026/27 season with a production The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Adapted by John O'Connor and Merlin Holland from Oscar Wilde’s only novel, the play focuses on Victorian aristocrat Dorian Gray - who sells his soul in return for a painting of him to age, instead of himself, so that he can retain his youth and beauty.
Director Dan Page said: “It has been a pleasure to work with this team of actors. It has been so fun to shape the characters in a way only they would have been able to deliver.
“They've all contributed to the creative direction of the show and we have had a great time delving into the characters and their motives in every line.
“I have particularly enjoyed working with Kurt and Roderick; their characters' relationship is reflected by Roderick being a more experienced stage actor (but by no means less talented) than Kurt. I couldn't have asked for a better assistant director, Stephen Morrell, who has taken on so many roles to support the cast and crew as well as treading the boards as James Vane.
“Finally, a thank you to Melody Dickens who is not just playing multiple roles but has also painted the picture of Dorian Gray itself”.
The play stars a host of new faces, including Kurt Cadwallender as Dorian and Roderick Murray as his friend lord Henry – as well as some members of the Theatre Space North East youth group residency at the Royalty.
The Picture of Dorian Gray runs from October 27-31, with tickets available via the theatre’s Ticketsource site priced at £10 or £8.50 for concessions.
