Emergency services called out over concerns for man near Northern Spire Bridge

Emergency services were called to the River Wear last in Sunderland last night, after concerns for the wellbeing of a man spotted near the Northern Spire bridge.

Officers from Northumbria Police requested help from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI inshore lifeboat shortly before midnight.

An RNLI statement said the crew had been called out at 11.56pm but the situation was resolved before they arrived.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed there had been reports of concern for a man spotted near the river.

He is now safe and well and receiving medical attention.

The spokesperson said: “Shortly before 11.45pm yesterday (Wednesday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man near the Northern Spire Bridge, Sunderland.

Emergency services attended and found a man in a state of distress. He was brought to safety and left in the care of medical professionals.”
