Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and Sunderland RNLI Atlantic lifeboat were called into action following reports that a distress flare had been set off in Seaburn at around 11.50pm on Friday, July 17.

In response to the emergency signal, both coastguard and lifeboat rescue teams carried out an extensive search of the area but found no trace of any vessel in difficulty.

A Pan Pan broadcast – typically used by those aboard a vessel to declare that they need assistance for an urgent situation – was also issued but received no response.

Coastguards then spoke to an angler on Roker Pier who confirmed seeing a red flare inland around the reported time of the call out, which suggested that there was no maritime connection.

Now the coastguard has issued a reminded to the public that red pyrotechnics are only to be used by those in distress situations.

A message shared on the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team Facebook page said: "Members of the public are reminded that red pyrotechnics are only for use in distress situations and that their use in any other circumstances is likely to be illegal.
