Woman charged after allegedly spitting at a police officer while intoxicated in a Sunderland street

Northumbria Police have charged a woman with being drunk and disorderly and common assault of a police officer after they were called following concerns for her welfare.

Officers were called to Peel Street on Tuesday, March 30 after receiving a report of concern for the welfare of a woman.

Police discovered the woman in an intoxicated state and when officers approached to see if she was okay, she began spitting at them.

She was subsequently arrested and has been charged with being drunk and disorderly and common assault of a police officer.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Police received a report of concern for a woman on Peel Street, Sunderland on Tuesday, March 30.

“Officers attended the scene where a woman was found in an intoxicated state. The officers approached the woman to check she was okay but she began spitting at them.

"She was arrested and has been subsequently charged with being drunk and disorderly and common assault of a police officer."
