Chief Inspector Nicola Wearing, of Northumbria Police, said: “There is no place for this type of offending and it is especially disappointing that somebody would target this shop – which is relied on by many families – at a time when the majority of people are pulling together.

“After being notified of the break-in, we were able to quickly deploy officers to the scene and they were there within four minutes of the call being made.

“From there, it was a case of good old-fashioned policing as officers searched for the suspect – and within minutes we heard a suspicious noise coming from behind some nearby bins.

“I would like to reassure our businesses that we are committed to taking swift and robust action against thieves and burglars, and carry out targeted patrols in identified areas in order to minimise this type of offending and ensure anyone responsible is brought to justice.”
