Police move to allay concerns over Sunderland city centre incident after reports of concern for woman in lane

Police have issued reassurances after an incident where concerns were raised about a woman during an early hours incident in the city centre.

A social media post has been widely shared, detailing how a man and woman came across two men and a woman off Vine Place in Sunderland on Monday, July 12, with a claim the woman had been dragged into the lane.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said today: “At about 1.20am yesterday we received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman in the Vine Place area of Sunderland.

“Officers spoke to the woman in question, who was in the company of two males, and checked on her welfare.

“The woman told officers that the activity was consensual and we were satisfied that no criminal offences had been committed.

“We would like to thank the member of the public who made the report in good faith, and would ask anybody who sees anything suspicious to always report it to police.”
