Police helicopter over Sunderland in search for wanted driver

The police helicopter was drafted in to help with the search for a wanted driver in Sunderland today.

It was over the city for the best part of an hour this afternoon, Wednesday, July 21, as officers hunted the driver of a car which had failed to stop and was later found abandoned.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said police had been looking for the driver of a car which had initially failed to stop then had been spotted again in the city centre : “At about 4.05pm we received a report that a vehicle that had previously failed to stop was being driven near to the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

"Officers attended the scene and located the grey Ford Mondeo near Whitehouse Road before the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

"Enquiries to locate the suspect are ongoing and those searches are being supported by the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter.”
