Police give update on why two people were arrested by armed police at Sunderland Tesco car park

Police have explained the reason for the reason behind the arrest of a man and woman after armed officers were called to the car park of a Sunderland supermarket.

Shortly afterwards, the force confirmed it had taken a 30-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman into custody and said it was in connection with an incident in Houghton on Friday, December 11.

Today, it has said the pair were arrested on suspicion of assault and they have since been released under investigation as inquiries continue.

A video of police outside the Tesco store, in Newcastle Road, was shared by witnesses on Facebook in the wake of the arrests.
