Police and fire service called to suspected arson attack

Emergency services received reports of a house fire in Houghton and are treating the blaze as suspected arson.

Police were called to Sunderland Street, Houghton shortly after 7am today, Tuesday, December 8 after receiving a report of a house fire.

There have been no injuries recorded and the blaze is being treated as suspected arson.

Emergency services extinguished the fire and enquires are ongoing.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 7am today (Tuesday) we received a report of a house fire on Sunderland Street, Houghton.

“Emergency services attended and the blaze was extinguished. Thankfully nobody was injured.

Enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, which officers are currently treating as suspected arson.

A Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade spokeswoman said: “Two crews went to the scene at 6.58am and left at 7.19am after extinguishing the fire.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

The early-morning blaze is being treated as a suspected arson attack police have confirmed.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Anyone with information is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 109 081220.”

Emergency services remain at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
