One man arrested after bomb squad called when police found 'suspicious items' at house in Amy Street in Sunderland

Northumbria Police have confirmed that a 45-year-old man has been arrested following a raid at a property in Amy Street in which a bomb squad were called.

Officers say they executed the planned search warrant at around 9.50pm on Friday, June 26 as part of an ongoing investigation at a property in the Southwick street.

When searching the property, police discovered some suspicious items and contacted bomb disposal experts to assist as a precaution.

It has since been confirmed by police that the items were not of an explosive nature and there is no wider threat to members of the public.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “At 9.54pm yesterday (Friday) as part of an ongoing investigation, we executed a planned warrant at an address on Amy Street in Sunderland.

“When searching the address, officers discovered some suspicious items. As a precaution, police contacted bomb disposal experts to assist officers who are searching the address.

“A 45-year-old man was arrested in connection with the investigation. He is assisting officers with their enquiries and remains in police custody at this time.”

The force has confirmed that officers are continuing to carry out their inquires at the address and urge the public to speak to an officer or call 101 if they have any concerns.
