Nikki Allan murder inquiry: Man remains under investigation as inquiries continue
Officers leading the hunt for the killer of a Sunderland schoolgirl more than 27 years ago have confirmed a man is still under investigation.
The man – whose details have not been made public – was questioned on suspicion of murdering the youngster.
He was released as the probe continues, with the force saying that remains the case as the New Year begins.
Today, A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “One man remains under investigation in relation to this investigation and enquiries are ongoing.”
A new team was set up to investigate Nikki’s brutal death in April 2017, and on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, they announced they had been successful in recovering new DNA from an unknown male.
As part of a fresh appeal, they asked any men who may have been in contact with Nikki or in the area of the crime scene to come forward.
She vanished while walking the short distance home from her grandparents’ to her own flat in West Garth shortly before 10pm on Wednesday, October 7, 1992.
Her body was found in the basement of the then-derelict Quayside Exchange. She had been stabbed 37 times.
A murder case against George Heron fell apart in court, while in In 2014 known serial killer Steven Grieveson was questioned over Nikki’s murder but no further action was taken.
