Murder investigation launched after man is stabbed to death in Durham street attack

A murder inquiry is underway after a man died following a suspected stabbing in a city centre.

Police and paramedics were called to Mitchell Street in Durham earlier today after the 41-year-old – who has not been named – was found fatally injured.

Durham Constabulary said formal identification has yet to take place, but police believe they know the identity of the deceased.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

A cordon remained in place around the scene during the day, with access later allowed into North Road, people were urged to avoid the area while officers carry out their inquiries.

Durham bus station has also been closed and buses are being diverted.

Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Green, who is leading the investigation, said: “This investigation is in the very early stages and we are working to establish exactly what has happened.

“I would like to thank the local community for their patience, understanding and cooperation while we deal with the incident in what are already difficult times.

“We will remain in the area for a significant amount of time and there will be inevitable disruption, but we are working as hard as we can to enable the public to get back to normal as quickly as possible.

“I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area between 7am and 8.30am today and saw anything that could help our investigation.”

The North East Ambulance Service said it was called to Mitchell Street at 8.21am to a report a man had been injured.

It sent a two double-crewed ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart), a rapid response paramedic and a specialist paramedic, with the Great North Air Ambulance requested, but not needed.

Anyone who has any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 56 of March 19.
