Motorist charged after Sunderland crash involving bus and car on St Patrick's Day

A 62-year-old man has been charged by Northumbria Police following a collision in Sunderland on Tuesday, March 17.

Northumbria Police confirmed to the Echo on Wednesday, March 18 that the force has charged a 62-year-old man with driving while over the legal alcohol limit following the incident in the city.

A spokeswoman for Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that it sent firefighters to the scene.

She added: “Crews from South Shields and Sunderland Central attended the scene. They stabilised the car and forced open the door of the bus.”

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman added: “Emergency services attended the incident and one lane was temporarily closed.

“No one is believed to have sustained any serious injuries.”

The man is due to appear in court next month.
