Death of man outside Seaham house was a 'tragic accident', police confirm

Detectives investigating the death of a man outside a Seaham house have confirmed it was the result of a ‘tragic accident’.

The emergency services were called Marlborough in Seaham yesterday, Wednesday, July 1, after reports a man had been found outside the back of one of the homes in the street.

Durham Constabulary has now confirmed following an investigation that the man’s death was the result of a tragic accident.

A spokesman for the force said: “Police can confirm that a man who was found dead in Marlborough, in Seaham, yesterday morning (Wednesday, July 1) died as a result of a tragic accident.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

An inquiry launched on Wednesday into how he came by his fatal injuries and police previously described his death as “unexplained.”

A blue tent was put up in the garden of the house, which is in the middle of a block of three homes, and a large cordon put up around the front and back of the street, which was expanded as the day went on.

Checks were also made at the front of the property, which looks onto paths and grass.

Officers wearing forensic suits were at the scene, with piping next to the front door checked as part of the probe. Others carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area.

This morning (Thursday, July 2), the tent has been removed from the scene and the tape has been taken down from around the street.

NEAS sent a double-crewed ambulance and an officer to the incident on Wednesday, and said a man had been found with injuries.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said it was asked to attend by the police and send an appliance and crew from its Seaham station to offer support.

People living near to the house, which is close to St John’s Church and the former Marlborough Surgery building, said a man had moved into the house on his own around 18 months ago.
