Arson investigation launched after early-morning van fire

Police officers have launched an arson inquiry after emergency services were called to a van fire in a Ryhope street.

The incident happened at around 2.20am on Tuesday, September 1 outside an address in Esdale, Ryhope.

Northumbria Police has now launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and it is currently being treated as arson by the force.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson told the Echo in a statement: “Shortly after 2.20am today (Tuesday) we received a report that a vehicle was on fire outside an address on Esdale, Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. Nobody was injured.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ of our website or by ringing 101 quoting log 95 010920.”
