Here are 11 people jailed or handed suspended sentences during January for offences in and around Sunderland.
They were all dealt with at Newcastle Crown Court unless otherwise stated.
5. Christopher Carney
Carney, 34, of Weardale Crescent, Houghton, pleaded guilty to two charges of arson, common assault and threats to damage property. Judge Julie Clemitson said the offence happened "out of the blue" and was out of character and sentenced Carney to 14 months, suspended for two years, with 180 hours unpaid work, programme requirements and alcohol monitoring.
6. Alan Wake
Wake, 39, of Cheltenham Drive, Boldon, admitted failing to provide a specimen, driving while disqualified and breach of a suspended sentence order.
Judge Robert Adams activated 12 months of the suspended prison term, followed by a further two months for the new offences, making a total of 14 months behind bars.
Wake was given a three-year-and-one-month driving ban.
7. Kieran Hewitt
Hewitt, 24, of Travers Street, Houghton, was convicted of assault and intentional strangulation after a magistrates court trial.
He was sent to Newcastle Crown Court for sentence, where Mr Recorder Andrew Latimer jailed him for 20 months with a five year restraining order.
8. Ian Parkin
Parkin, 42, of Vilette Road, Sunderland, admitted wounding with intent and been jailed for three years.
