10 dramatic photos as a Sunderland landmark hosts a Civil War re-enactment

The grounds of Hylton Castle have been transformed into an English Civil War battlefield.

This bank holiday weekend has seen Sunderland transported back in time at the Cavaliers and Roundheads waged civil war in the grounds of Hylton Castle.

The iconic city landmark has once again played host to The English Civil War Society, with visitors treated to spectacular sword fights, pistol firing and the swinging of maces on horseback as the battle re-enactment saw the Royalists and Parliamentarians go head-to-head.

Running from 12pm until 5pm on Sunday, May 3, and Monday, May 4, those visiting Hylton Castle also had the opportunity to take part in face painting, heritage crafts and historical storytelling.

The days kicked off with a cavalry display, which was followed by infantry exercises and an artillery display before the ‘Battle for Sunderland’ got underway.

She said: “It provides such a great opportunity for local residents and visitors from wider afield to explore the castle site and Sunderland’s local heritage.

“The English Civil War Society had a number of fabulous displays organised ahead of the main battle, and there were plenty of activities around the site for families and children to take part in.

“We would like to thank Sunderland North Area Committee for funding the event.”

Hylton Castle hosts a variety of events and tours for members of the public to get involved in throughout the year.
