They all made the pages of the Sunderland Echo in 1983 and here’s a round-up of the great deeds they were doing 36 years ago.

These four were sensations on the ice 36 years ago. They were all members of Sunderland Ice Skating Club which took honours in the Haig Oundjian National Novice Free Skating Competitions which were held at the Queens Ice Club in London.

6. All smiles
No wonder these youngsters were beaming. They were all from Springwell Junior School which won first prize in a Sunderland schools dental health competition in 1983. The honour went to a class of second and third year pupils and 33 of them were involved.
They had spent two months learning all about teeth, dental care, hygiene and the work of dentists.
