How Sunderland's covid infection rate compares with the rest of the North East

According to the latest data Sunderland’s weekly coronavirus case rate fell slightly.

In the seven days leading up to October 23, Sunderland’s Covid-19 case rate stands at 326.2 per 100,000 people as 906 new infections were recorded.

It is down slightly from the week prior, which saw 919 cases recorded at a rate of 330.9 per 100,000 people.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Wearside is currently the fifth most affected area in the region, behind Stockon-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Gateshead and Hartlepool.

Stockton continues to be the worst hit area of the North East, with a case rate of 444.4 per 100,000 people, up from 360.8 last week.

Northumberland is currently the least affected area, with 174.9 cases per 100,000 people, however that has increased from 167.5 per 100,000 in the last seven days.

Here are the current case rates for the seven days up October 23 for the local authority areas in the North East according to the Press Association:

Stockton-on-Tees: 444.4 per 100,000 people with 877 cases.

Middlesbrough: 393 per 100,000 people with 554 cases.

Gateshead: 356.8 per 100,000 people with 721 cases.

Hartlepool: 338.4 per 100,000 people with 317 cases.

Sunderland: 326.2 per 100,000 people with 906 cases.

Redcar and Cleveland: 312.1 per 100,000 people with 428 cases.

Newcastle upon Tyne: 299.8 per 100,000 people with 908 cases.

County Durham: 293.3 per 100,000 people with 1,555 cases.

Darlington: 292.1 per 100,000 people with 312 cases.

North Tyneside: 270.3 per 100,000 people with 562 cases.

South Tyneside: 235.1 per 100,000 people with 355 cases.

Northumberland: 174.9 per 100,000 people with 564 cases.
