Grand Central announces cancellation of more than half North East services between Sunderland and London over coronavirus

Train operator Grand Central is cancelling more than half of services between the North East and London until further notice due to coronavirus.

From Monday, March 23, a reduced timetable will run on the line between London and Kings Cross and Sunderland, which also calls at Hartlepool.

Grand Central said: “Like many industries across the UK, we are looking at ways to offer the best service to our customers, taking into account that some of our staff and our suppliers’ staff may not be available for work. This is to ensure we remain effective in our day-to-day operations.

“To achieve this we are consolidating our services, which will mean the temporary cancellation of selected trains on our North East and West Riding Routes, from Monday, March 23.”

Service cancellations from Mondays to Fridays are: 08:27 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 12:57 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 16:48 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 08:44 Sunderland to London King's Cross, 12:30 Sunderland to London King's Cross, and 17:30 Sunderland to London King's Cross.

Saturday services affected are: 07:48 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 13:18 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 16:48 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 08:28 Sunderland to London King's Cross, 12:18 Sunderland to London King's Cross, and 17:29 Sunderland to London King's Cross.

Sunday cancellations are: 09:50 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 13:48 London King's Cross to Sunderland, 09:23 Sunderland to London King's Cross and 18:12 Sunderland to London King's Cross.

Customers who have advance tickets for any of the cancelled services can use them on any other Grand Central service on the same day, the previous day, or the day after the date on their ticket, as well as reschedule their journey.

A full refund can be obtained from the point of purchase.

Passengers with off-peak tickets will also be able to travel on peak-time services.

Anyone with a ticket who no longer wishes to travel should follow the normal refund procedure though a £10 admin fee has been waived for the duration of the coronavirus situation.
