Sunderland pupils love their new playground equipped with pirate ship, outdoor kitchen and bug hotel
“Seeing the joy on pupils’ faces as they use these new areas makes it all worthwhile”
Children and staff at Northern Saints CofE Academy are celebrating the unveiling of their new playground featuring a pirate ship, outdoor kitchen, bug hotels, and a sensory path.

The playground, which was officially opened yesterday (April 21), is designed to promote outdoor learning through play as well as supporting pupils’ wellbeing and mental health.
Other features include a reading shed, science area, and an outdoor space for pupils to enjoy some quiet time.
Speaking following the opening, headteacher Rachel Heaney said: “Our investment in our pupils is always a top priority, particularly when it comes to their wellbeing.
“Outdoor play is so important—not only for physical activity, but for giving children the space to build relationships, explore their creativity and enjoy time away from the classroom.
“Seeing the joy on our pupils’ faces as they use these new areas makes it all worthwhile."

The playground was officially opened by Sunderland mayor Cllr Ehthesham Haque and Mayoress Cllr Lynda Scanlan, along with Durham and Newcastle Learning Trust CEO Paul Rickeard.
The mayor and mayoress also enjoyed a tour of the school, meeting the pupils and talking about their gold chains of office.

Cllr Ehthesham Haque praised the “beautiful school” and its outdoor spaces, describing the new playground as “a wonderful investment in pupils’ wellbeing and happiness and a place where they can build friendships and take a break from the pressures of the classroom”.
He added: “Having access to such facilities will help pupils feel confident and ready to learn, while also playing an important role in your personal development.
“Through play, pupils will develop teamwork, resilience and creativity - skills that will stay with them throughout their lives. Northern Saints remains committed to creating a positive environment for all pupils."

The new facility certainly seems to have won the approval of those who matter most - the children.
Year 3 pupil Marcey said: “Our new playground will help us all keep active and make even more friends. I love the sandpit, we're really lucky."
Year 5 pupil Harry added: “Its a good place to play or chill out. The science area is a cool place to go and explore nature. It's my favourite."
