Sunderland children make and sell their own poppies to support Armed Forces veterans
Children at Farringdon Academy have been honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice by making and selling their own poppies.
The school’s Poppy Club designed and made their own “unique poppy designs inspired by the traditional emblem of remembrance”.

On Armistice Day (November 11) the children have been selling the poppies to raise money for SSAFA – the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Airmen and Families Association.
One of those pupils taking part was Year 6 pupil Flynn, 10, who said: “I had lots of fun creating my poppies. It was great seeing my friends make them as well and seeing their designs, but the best bit was raising the money for the veterans.”
Classmate Jasmin, also 10, added: “It was fun making the poppies but I liked selling them in school. We made an amazing amount of money which made me feel good.”

The Poppy Club was organised by teaching assistants Miss E. Davison and Mrs L. Cooper.
Miss Davison said: “It’s been really enjoyable seeing the engagement from the children. They have participated in the event of Armistice Day with excitement but most of all, pride.”
Mrs Cooper added: “We had a record number of children taking part, and it was lovely to see them giving up their time after school to support such a good cause.”
Once all of the handmade poppies have been sold, members of SSAFA will be invited to visit Farringdon Academy, where they will meet the children and be presented with a cheque for the final fundraising total.
Headteacher Claire McDermott said: “The whole school community is incredibly proud of Year 6 for their creativity, generosity and commitment to remembering those who have served.”
