Sunderland of the future: Amazing image shows how city centre and Riverside will look after Wear footbridge, Culture House and Eye Infirmary are completed

A new computer-generated image shows how the city centre will look when work is completed on a number of projects already under way as well as others to follow.

The highly detailed digital projection has been created by North East architects FaulknerBrowns for Sunderland City Council and shows the shape of things to come for the the city’s new urban quarter, which is already benefiting from more than £500million of development projects.

The changes will see the creation of new places to spend time, meet, eat and socialise, as well as outdoor places to enjoy and new office spaces which will create hundreds of new jobs opportunities.

Included in the image are a number of developments that have been announced already, including Culture House, the new Eye Hospital, a 10,000-capacity arena on the old Crowtree Leisure Centre site, a new footbridge over the Wear and more housing that will line the riverbank.

Some buildings already taking shape, including the Legal & General-backed Maker & Faber and the new Farringdon Row car park, also feature.

City council leader Coun Graeme Miller said the image showed how the city centre would be transformed over the coming decade: “It’s clear to see the rate of transformation at Riverside Sunderland, and that is all part of a wider vision for the city centre which has been brought to life in these amazing CGIs, showcasing how spectacular it will look within the next ten years.

“We are confident and ambitious as a city and that’s why this picture isn’t just a ‘masterplan’, it’s a delivery plan. A picture of what we intend to deliver for Sunderland - a picture of what this city deserves.
