During this week, McDonald’s has held a number of tests behind closed doors to explore the safest way to reopen the restaurants.

McDonald’s, which has more than 1,270 restaurants in the UK and employs 135,000, will only reopen 15 at first – the locations of eateries are expected to be revealed next week.

What safety precautions will be put in place?

McDonald’s says it will be introducing perspex screens and floor markings in certain areas and providing additional protective equipment including non-medical grade face masks.

All employees will be asked to confirm if they are fit and able to work and contactless thermometers will be used to take staffs’ temperatures on arrival at work for every shift.

Social distancing measures will also be introduced for all of delivery and service partners.

What will be on the menu?

Due to there being much smaller teams at the chain’s restaurants, McDonald’s will be returning with a limited list which still includes many of the franchise’s classic meals.

It will not be serving breakfast to reduce the complexities in the kitchens at menu changeover.

How will it be delivered?

McDonald’s is working with delivery partners such as Uber Eats and Just Eat to ensure the wellbeing of delivery drivers as well as their employees.

What has the CEO said about reopening?

Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, said: “When we return it will be different as we all adjust to this new normal. I want to apologise in advance if our first wave of reopened restaurants does not serve your area.

“Rest assured, we are working hard to reopen more restaurants, but I am adamant this must be at the right pace with the wellbeing of our employees, suppliers and customers front of mind. Thank you for your patience.

“Slowly, but safely we will return to towns and cities across the UK and Ireland and thank you for your continued support as we work through this crisis. We will continue to keep you updated via email, our website and our social media channels.”
